Canon EOS 20D

After deliberating and drooling over various DSLRs, I decided to take a plunge and get a DSLR. I did a lot of research before making my commitment. The problem was choosing between Nikon and Canon. Both make DSLRs, amazing ones to top it and both have an extensive line of lenses. So I decided to evaluate my choices in both cases.

My choices for Body were narrowed down to:

Nikon:

D50 (I almost got one)

D70s  (I wanted this)

D80 (I thought about it)

Canon:

Digital Rebel xt/xti (I considered this option)

EOS 20D (I finally fell for this)

EOS 30D (I thought about it)

So, I went through page after page or user feedback & reviews on http://www.dpreview.com, Fredmiranda and POTN. D50 or D70s was my first choice. I could have got one refurbed from any online vendor. So I looked into the lenses I would buy. There was a decent option of starting up with a good selection of 18-55 and 70-200mm lenses on Nikon. Ofcourse they were not extremely fast but they were sharp and were good value for money. Now if I wanted fast lenses, Nikon was gonna cost me a little more than my liking. But still, this was an option. So I went ahead and started scouting for D70s and D50. By this time I had realized that D80 would be out of my budget. I really wanted D50. Its cheap, its reliable and is almost same as D70.

I started looking into Canon system, as an option. I had a prejudice that Canon is expensive.  Well, guess what, I found out that it is not. So I started looking into their Rebel series. I went to a local shot and tried them out. 350D and 400D, both felt fragile in my hands. I am generally a careful guy, but I knew that I would not be spending money on plastic. In the same shop, out of the corner of my eyes, I caught a glimpse of 30D. I tried it out, and it felt solid in my hands. Just like Nikon systems. Oh and I made a mistake of using continuous shooting mode. 5Fps is a hard sound to beat, I tell ya. Now, as I am in Dubai, the prices of everything is artificially increased, just like everything else. So I had a look at adorama.com, and they had some refurbs @ $719.00. Tempting.

D80 was getting to be a bit expensive, and Canon had my wishlist lenses in their line of lenses. They are affordable too. I mean if I buy 1-2 lens a year, still in 2-3 year I can have all the items from my wish list.

Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM            $589.85
Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM            $1,035
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM                $331.83
Canon EF 135mm f/2.8 with Softfocus        $300
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8                $70
Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX Aspherical DG DF        $415.25

Sigma 50-500mm f4-6.3 EX APO RF HSM        $870.00
Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX APO IF HSM        $716.38

Okay, its not a very extensive list and certainly I would be looking forward to getting a Canon EF 70-200 F/2.8 IS USM, but currently, sigma 24-70mm is on my priority. I got a 50mm f/1.8 already and am “very happy” with its performance.

So, thats how I got my first DLSR. Now in the next part, I will try to write about its performance.
